Happy Jack Recreation Area & Pole Mountain Open Space

Found off of exit 323 on I-80 east of Laramie, Happy Jack is a wonderful area for hiking, camping, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and even home to trails for horseback riding. Interlacing trails range from .4 miles to 3 miles with enough space to spend a few days enjoying nature.

Happy Jack and Pole Mountain are a part of the Medicine Bow National Forest and a small fee is required per vehicle per day. Here you may encounter white tail deer, moose, beaver, an occasional black bear, and many more native animals so keep an eye out. Stop into the Laramie Visitor Center for maps and information.

Happy Jack Recreation Area has two campgrounds: Tie City Campground and Yellow Pine Campground. From developed campgrounds to dispersed camping, opportunities abound. While electric, sewer, water hook-ups, and showers are not available, most campgrounds have picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. Where available, reservations are recommended for holiday weekends. Visit recreation.gov.
